How to Lay Concrete Floor Tiles: Instone's Step-by-Step Method

Instone's standard method for laying concrete floor tiles — base preparation, bonding, levelling and jointing — the same 4-step procedure we use on railway platforms and commercial floors.

Laying concrete tiles is a mortar-set job

Unlike sand-set pavers, concrete floor tiles are bedded on a cement-sand mortar. A flat, well-prepared base and a proper bond are what keep them level and crack-free for decades. This is the standard 4-step procedure Instone follows on platforms, malls and residential floors.

Step 1 — Base preparation

Level the floor and prepare a 1:4 cement-sand mortar bed. The surface must be true and even — any dip or hump in the base will telegraph through to the finished tile.

Step 2 — Bond the tile

Wet the back of each tile with a cement paste (slurry) just before laying. This creates the bond between the tile and the mortar bed and prevents hollow spots.

Step 3 — Lay and level

Place the tile onto the bed and tap it gently with a rubber mallet to bed it in and bring it flush to level. Work to a string line and check with a spirit level as you go, keeping joint widths consistent. For outdoor areas, hold a slight fall so water drains away.

Step 4 — Point and cure

Fill the joints with a pigment (colour-matched) mix, then clean off any excess from the tile face within 24 hours, before it hardens. Let the floor cure before opening it to traffic so the bed reaches full strength.

Because Instone tiles are fibre-reinforced (450–600 Kg/cm² compressive strength, 1.7–2.3 mm abrasion, 3–5.5% water absorption), a correctly laid floor stands up to heavy footfall and monsoon wear.
